With over three decades of experience, Khan has established himself as one of the most popular and influential actors in Indian cinema. He has received several awards, including nine Filmfare Awards, four National Film Awards, and an AACTA Award. Additionally, one of his film productions received an Academy Award nomination. Khan was honored with the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2010 by the Government of India, and he received an honorary award from the Government of China in 2017.

In the 1990s, he established himself as a leading actor by appearing in several commercially successful films, including Dil in 1990, Raja Hindustani in 1996 (for which he won his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor), and Sarfarosh in 1999.
