Andre Agassi Wiki: Andre Agassi, a retired American professional tennis player and former world No. 1, has won eight Grand Slam singles titles and a gold medal at the 1996 Olympics, as well as finishing as the runner-up in seven other Grand Slam tournaments. Agassi, considered one of the most charismatic, talented, and unconventional athletes in the sport, has achieved a “Career Super Slam” and his historic victories on the court will always be remembered by tennis fans worldwide.

Since retiring, he has actively participated in numerous charitable tournaments and also served as a coach to Novak Djokovic during the 2017 French Open. Agassi’s father is reported to have forced him to play tennis as a child, which he did not like. He claims in his autobiography that the experience inspired him to be a better father to his own son. In 1998, he experienced a career resurgence, rising from 110th to sixth in the rankings in a year before retiring in 2006.

By the age of two, he was able to serve a tennis ball across a full court. At the age of 13, he was sent to Nick Bolletieri’s tennis academy in Bradenton, Florida, where he would later become his coach. In 1987, Agassi won his first professional tournament. The shaggy-haired, right-handed player with a powerful forehand began to gain attention after winning six tournaments in 1988. One of the products he endorsed used the tagline “Image is everything,” which became shorthand for some tennis fans’ perception of Agassi. Agassi’s charm, flashy on-court attire, and good looks made him a media sensation. He further incited traditional tennis fans by refusing to play at Wimbledon due to the event’s dress code and grass courts.

Between 1990 and 1991, Agassi reached three Grand Slam finals, but he lost each time, including a defeat by his rival Pete Sampras at the 1990 U.S. Open. This led some to question his ability to win big matches. However, he put his doubters to rest when he defeated Goran Ivanisevic at Wimbledon in 1992 to win his first Grand Slam title. The previous year, he had ended his boycott of the tournament. After being dropped by Bolletieri, who questioned Agassi’s dedication to the sport and falling out of the top 30 in the rankings, Agassi returned in 1994 with a new, more focused game and a new coach, Brad Gilbert. Despite not being seeded for the 1994 U.S. Open, he became the first unseeded player to win the tournament since 1966.

Career

Andre Agassi, a former world No.1 tennis player, won his first Olympic gold medal in the men’s singles event at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Despite his highly publicized marriage to actress Brooke Shields in 1997, Agassi’s tennis career was plagued by a recurring wrist injury, causing his ranking to drop to 141. However, Agassi remained focused on his comeback and worked his way back to the top 10 world ranking, despite several disappointing losses throughout 1998 and 1999 and his split with Shields in April 1999.

In 1999, Agassi achieved a historic victory when he won the French Open, becoming the first male athlete to win all four Grand Slam tournaments on three different surfaces. He also won the U.S. Open in September, regaining his top spot in the world rankings by the end of the year. Agassi won his second and third Australian Open titles in 2000 and 2001, respectively. He married fellow tennis star Steffi Graf later in 2001. In 2003, he won his fourth Australian Open title, but his 2002 season was plagued by recurring wrist problems.

In a surprising turn of events, Agassi reached the U.S. Open final in 2005 but lost to Roger Federer in four sets. He retained his top 10 ranking until early 2006, but he retired from the sport after the U.S. Open that year. However, he continued to participate in the sport and even coached Serbian Novak Djokovic from 2017 to 2018. Agassi was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2011.
